The 304/304L Advantage

As the most versatile stainless steel grade, Type 304 provides excellent weldability and formability. Our flat bars are typically dual-certified as 304/304L, ensuring low carbon content for superior corrosion resistance after welding.

Key Specifications:
• ASTM A276 (Standard Spec)
• ASTM A484 (General Requirements)
• Non-Magnetic (Annealed state)
Cold Drawn (CD) High Precision

Processed at room temperature to achieve superior dimensional accuracy and a bright, smooth surface.

  • Sharp, defined 90-degree corners
  • Bright, reflective "metallic" finish
  • Tighter thickness & width tolerances
  • Increased tensile strength from cold working
Best for: Architectural trim, machinery parts, and decorative brackets.
HRAP Industrial Grade

Hot Rolled, Annealed, and Pickled. This process removes scale and restores corrosion resistance after rolling.

  • Slightly rounded "mill" edges
  • Dull, matte gray (pickled) finish
  • Economical choice for structural use
  • Stress-relieved via annealing
Best for: Support structures, industrial frames, and marine hardware.

Technical Insights

In its fully annealed state, 304 stainless steel is non-magnetic. However, during the Cold Drawing process, the crystalline structure can undergo a partial transformation into martensite, which may cause the flat bar to exhibit a slight magnetic pull. This does not affect its corrosion resistance.
The "L" in 304L stands for "Low Carbon" (0.03% max vs 0.08%). This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, making 304L superior for heavy-gauge welded structures. Most of our inventory is dual-certified, meeting the requirements of both grades simultaneously.
Cold Drawn bars follow tighter tolerances (typically h11 or h12) for thickness and width, providing a "true-to-size" fit. HRAP bars follow ASTM A484 standards, which allow for slightly larger deviations and a "mill edge" rather than a precision sharp corner.
304 has good machinability but tends to work-harden. When drilling 304 flat bars, we recommend using cobalt drill bits with constant pressure and slow speeds. For high-volume machining projects, Cold Drawn bars are preferred due to their consistent grain structure.
