Engineering Decision

Monel 400 vs. Monel K500

While both offer exceptional corrosion resistance, their mechanical strengths cater to vastly different engineering demands.

The Corrosion Specialist

Monel® 400

A solid-solution alloy that can be hardened only by cold working. Best known for its toughness over a wide temperature range.

  • Hardness (Rockwell B) 65 - 80
  • Tensile Strength (ksi) 70 - 90
  • Magnetic Property Slightly Magnetic
High Ductility & Impact Strength
The High-Strength Choice

Monel® K500

Combines the corrosion resistance of 400 with the added advantages of greater strength and hardness via age hardening.

  • Hardness (Rockwell C) 27 - 35
  • Tensile Strength (ksi) 140 - 160
  • Magnetic Property Non-Magnetic
2x Strength of Alloy 400
Property Comparison Monel 400 (N04400) Monel K500 (N05500)
Primary Advantage Workability & General Corrosion High Yield Strength & Hardness
Seawater Resistance Excellent (High Velocity) Excellent (Pitting Resistant)
Typical Applications Heat Exchangers, Marine Valves Pump Shafts, Oil Well Tools
Thermal Treatment Annealing Only Age Hardening (Precipitation)

Engineered for Survival

Monel alloys 400 and K500 are designed for environments where standard austenitic and duplex stainless steels face catastrophic failure.

🧪

Hydrofluoric Acid (HF)

One of the few materials capable of handling all concentrations of HF acid up to the boiling point. Essential for alkylation units in oil refineries.

High-Velocity Seawater

While many metals pit in stagnant water, Monel excels in high-speed marine environments, resisting erosion-corrosion and stress-cracking.

🔥

Reducing Environments

Superior resistance to de-aerated hydrochloric and sulfuric acids under reducing conditions compared to high-nickel chromium alloys.

The Passivation Secret:

Unlike stainless steels that rely on a Chromium-oxide film, Monel forms a tenacious Nickel-Copper complex layer. This film remains stable in de-aerated acids and saline solutions where Chromium-oxide would dissolve, ensuring long-term structural integrity.

Expert Q&A

Technical Insights

Deep dive into Monel 400 & K500 metallurgy and procurement.

Monel 400 exhibits slight magnetism at room temperature but becomes non-magnetic above its Curie point (approx. 20-50°C). Monel K500 is specially engineered to be non-magnetic down to -100°C, making it essential for directional drilling tools.
The key is continuous cutting. Use powerful machines, sharp carbide tools, and positive feed rates. If the tool dwells, the material will work-harden immediately, potentially destroying the cutting edge on the next pass.
Our inventory complies with ASTM B127 (Plate/Sheet), ASTM B164 (Rod/Bar), and ASTM B165 (Seamless Pipe). All materials are supplied with full EN 10204 3.1 MTRs.
The cost is driven by the high Nickel content (63%). While the initial investment is higher than stainless steel, Monel’s resistance to hydrofluoric acid and high-velocity salt water reduces replacement frequency, lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
