Choose Your Finish: Hot Rolled vs. Cold Drawn

The delivery condition of SAE 1045 steel significantly impacts your machining time, tool wear, and final product cost. Use our guide to select the right fit for your project.

Hot Rolled (HR) 1045

Cost-Effective Choice
SAE 1045 Hot Rolled Steel Surface Condition
  • Surface: Rough finish with protective black oxide scale.
  • Tolerances: Standard mill tolerances; requires more machining allowance.
  • Internal Stress: Low internal stress, minimal distortion after heavy cutting.
  • Applications: Large gears, forged blocks, and heavy structural shafts.
Expert Tip: Best for components where significant surface material will be removed during machining or for large-scale structural use.

Cold Drawn (CD) 1045

Precision Ready
SAE 1045 Cold Drawn Steel Bright Finish
  • Surface: Bright, smooth, and scale-free "shiny" finish.
  • Tolerances: Tight dimensional accuracy; often used "as-is" for diameter.
  • Mechanicals: Higher yield strength and hardness than hot rolled bars.
  • Applications: Precision bolts, hydraulic shafts, and high-speed CNC parts.
Expert Tip: Ideal for high-speed CNC machining. The precise diameter and bright finish reduce setup time and secondary processing costs.

Why AISI 1045 is the Preferred Choice

Beyond standard specifications, SAE 1045 offers a unique combination of processability and post-hardening performance that alloy steels often cannot match at this price point.

⚙️

High Machinability

Rated at 70% of AISI 1212. This allows for higher spindle speeds and longer tool life, significantly reducing your part-to-part production costs.

🔥

Hardening Versatility

Perfect for localized induction or flame hardening. Achieve high wear resistance (up to HRC 60) on critical surfaces while maintaining a tough, ductile core.

🏗️

Reliable Toughness

Excellent impact resistance when normalized. It provides the structural integrity required for axles, pins, and connecting rods under cyclic loading.

Technical Expertise

Optimized Heat Treatment Processes

At SS Alloy Steel, we control the thermal cycle to unlock the full potential of your 1045 steel components. Whether you need a soft annealed state for complex forging or a Quenched & Tempered state for high strength.

  • Normalizing: 850°C - 880°C. Refines grain structure and improves uniformity.
  • Annealing: 800°C - 850°C. Achieve max machinability for heavy CNC milling.
  • Hardening: 820°C - 860°C. Water or oil quench depending on section size.
  • Tempering: 400°C - 650°C. Tailors final hardness and impact strength.

Buying & Technical FAQ

Quick answers to the most common questions about SAE 1045 steel procurement, heat treatment, and fabrication.

Can SAE 1045 steel be welded?
Yes, but it requires caution. Due to its 0.45% carbon content, it has medium weldability. We recommend preheating to 200°C–300°C and post-weld stress relieving to prevent hydrogen cracking. Using low-hydrogen electrodes is essential for structural integrity.
What is the typical hardness of SAE 1045?
In its as-rolled or normalized condition, it typically reaches 170 to 210 Brinell (HB). After induction hardening and oil/water quenching, surface hardness can be boosted to HRC 54-60, making it ideal for high-wear components like gears.
How does 1045 compare to AISI 1018?
While 1018 is easier to weld and cold-form, 1045 offers significantly higher tensile strength and better response to heat treatment. Use 1018 for simple brackets and 1045 for heavy-duty shafts, pins, and any part requiring surface hardening.
Do you provide MTC 3.1 certification?
Yes. All SAE 1045 shipments from SS Alloy Steel are supplied with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) according to EN 10204 3.1, detailing the chemical analysis, mechanical testing results, and heat treatment batch data.
What is the standard lead time for custom cut orders?
For stock bars and plates requiring precision cutting, our standard lead time is 3-5 working days. For complex machining or bored hollow bars, it typically takes 10-14 days. We provide global shipping with real-time tracking.
